While Simon Tiger and Viktor Johansson were naturally among the favorites heading into the Valkenswaard round, the two Swedes found themselves upstaged by local hero Yorick Maeyninckx, who wasted no time asserting his dominance during the first two qualifying heats.

In addition to claiming victory in both Q1 and Q2, the Belgian driver also clocked the fastest lap in both sessions. Having already made a strong impression at the end of last season at the Estering circuit, Yorick clearly has no intention of letting his Scandinavian rivals steal the spotlight in the Netherlands.

“The feeling is really excellent,” said the Volvo 242 driver.

“Obviously, we know this circuit extremely well, which is an advantage, but it’s truly a great sensation to be able to drive like this on such a track.”

Despite holding a comfortable lead in the Open 2WD category, Maeyninckx is not underestimating the Tiger/Johansson duo.

“I think Simon Tiger and Viktor Johansson will gradually find their rhythm as the weekend progresses. I fully expect them to get back into contention quickly. Plus, the competition this weekend is fierce, so I’m keeping an eye on everyone. I know very well that a driver like Kristof Bex is also one to watch when it comes to fighting for the win.”

For the local favorite, the key to performance at Valkenswaard is quite clear.

“The gravel section is really tricky, and the joker lap is no exception. Personally, I feel very much at home on the gravel portions, and that’s a good sign because I know that’s where the difference can be made.”

For now, Yorick remains careful not to confuse speed with haste.

“You always have to stay calm. Saying I’m going to win today is a bit premature… We’ll see how things unfold. Even though I’m here to fight for the top spot, I know the weekend has only just begun.”
